Leggings

Leggings, universally refer to various types of leg coverings. Firstly, in the form of skin-tight trousers, a tighter version of the capris, they entered women’s fashion in the 1960s. Perhaps, they were worn with a large belt or waistband and slip-on high heels or ballet flat-styled shoes.

In the 18th century, men’s leg wear were referred to as leggings. However, in the 19th century, they usually referred to leg clothing for infants and were matched with a jacket. Also, leg-wrappings made of leather or wool and worn by soldiers and trappers were called leggings.

Then, aerobics and dance gained popularity. Moreover, there was widespread adoption of the synthetic fibre Lycra. They came to further prominence in the 1970s and ’80s. Eventually, they made their way into streetwear.

Modern fashion

By the early-1990s, in many parts of the United States, they were actually replacing jeans. Commonly, Girls wore them with long oversized tee-shirts, sweatshirts or sweaters.
